Some conservatives never cease to shock and appal. When Canadians follow what “America’s Taliban”, the Tea Party, is up to, they sometimes get literally sick to their stomachs. Once in a while, though, this kind of stupidity also rears its head right here in Canada.
After Canada’s foreign minister John Baird lashed into Russia over its anti-gay policies, Baird quickly found himself the target of bigotry and hatred. A Tea-Party-style group of idiots (sorry, there’s no polite way of putting this) called the REAL Women of Canada attacked Baird and gave him a harsh dressing-down for supporting gay rights.
“Just who does John Baird think he is?” said the group’s leader, Gwendolyn Landolt. The loon went on to reprimand Baird for promoting what she calls un-Canadian values.
The right not to be discriminated against, or persecuted like in Russia, on the basis of race, gender or sexual orientation is a Canadian value, enshrined in our constitution. Only in the la-la-land that Landolt calls home would this be not considered a Canadian value.
The LanDOLTS in Canada should try to emigrate to the US, preferably a region dominated by their Tea Party siblings. There they can return to their Neanderthal roots, arm themselves to the teeth, and keep repeating their mantra that the Earth is really just a few thousand years old. But Canada, fortunately, is a grown-up nation, and as such not the right place for this type of backwardness.
But let them flap their toothless gums, for it will make it that much easier to unseat the Harperites at the next election. Like Sun News Network, Rob Ford or Tim Hudak, the REAL Women of Canada represent the kind of company Prime Minister Stephen Harper can well do without.
